Preface: Yes, I know August is still considered summer but my brain still thinks I'm in college which means August 1 marks your countdown to the start of classes, the start of classes means autumn, and autumn means no more summer.
I have a confession. I gave in to something I swore I'd never give in to. Some people might say I "drank the koolaid" or whatever that saying is. You know how after guys buy their future fiance's engagement ring, they're all like "I went to Tiffany's" (insert bro handshake). Well, I went somewhere that changed my life too.
I went to SoulCycle.
Now I already know what you're thinking because you're thinking what I was thinking not too long ago - SERIOUSLY, Madison? Your blog was so trendy and cool and now you're going to write about a spin class? *Unsubscribes* But hear me out for a minute, because this post is about much more than just a spin studio, it's about a lifestyle that I want to model and I want you to join me.
To be completely honest with you, I feel like Kimmy Schmidt in the episode of Season 1: "KImmy Rides a Bike." If you haven't seen it, I strongly recommend it.
For a while now, I have been slowly getting more comfortable with myself and how I look. This is key because it can be dangerous entering "work out world" when you're unhappy with your appearance. It can lead to overexercising, under eating, and not really taking care of yourself mentally and physically but only seeing the outward results. So before I got completely addicted to working out and eating healthy, I made sure that I was happy with who I am and ready to slowly make myself a healthier individual, not a skinnier one.
I work across the street from a SoulCycle studio. I know, I am one lucky duck. After passing it for an entire month and a half every single day on my route to work, I made the phone call to schedule my first class. At this time, I was totally unaware that the experience would be so incredible that I would actually dedicate a blog post to it.
The class I signed up for was "Ellie Goulding vs. Florence + the Machine" so right off the bat you know it's going to be insanely awesome. For a first timer, I was super nervous. I haven't joined a gym since I moved to DC so it's safe to say I was not in tip-top shape to be doing an intense spin class.
I have trouble explaining what class was like - I equate it to a religious experience. I think I even teared up a bit about halfway through - not because I was struggling, which I definitely was - but because it was an amazing emotional release. I was surrounded by other people pushing themselves to be their best selves, who wanted to erase the past week and start fresh, and I was listening to an instructor who spoke the words my heart was thinking but my mouth couldn't say... at a spin class! I almost felt like I was at a concert or something.
With that all being said, I have some autumn aspirations for myself that I thought I'd share with you.
- Find my soul.
I mean this on a physical, mental, and emotional level - I want to be a regular at my local Soul Cycle to stay fit and in shape. I want to start taking care of myself emotionally and allow myself to feel whatever I'm feeling and to do so unapologetically.This will transition into my mental state, I want to continue finding myself and putting my mind at ease. I hope to practice yoga and mediation to help focus my mind. These all will come with time, but it is an aspiration to make these part of my normal routine and less of a conscious effort.
- Stay hydrated.
I have been pretty dehydrated lately, for many reasons. It's time to change that - more water and less *dehydrating liquids.* It's pretty much that simple.
- Eat the colors of the rainbow.
I got this idea from my Soul Cycle instructor, Michelle - yes, I might be obsessed. But, I want to find myself by the end of autumn eating healthier options without even thinking about it. This will take discipline, couponing - because eating healthy is like the most expensive hobby on the planet, and lots of recipe magazines, books, and websites.
- Stick to these three goals.
It's difficult enough when people make 100 goals to stick to one of them. So my goal is to keep up with these three this autumn and really try to see my lifestyle shift from a conscious effort to an effortless healthy lifestyle.
