Does anyone have those moments sometimes when you just want to quit? You think to yourself, "What am I doing? This is so stupid. I am crazy. This will never work." *Starts looking up one way flights to Timbuktu, Africa.* Well, I do that, too... pretty much every day.
A few weeks ago I was reminded of a quote that has always inspired me, in fact, it's the reason I am doing what I'm doing today. Let me share it with you:
What if Michael Jordan had quit? Well, he did quit... No he retired. Yeah, that's right. He retired. But before that in high school, what if he had quit when he didn't make the team? He would've never made Space Jam... And I love Space Jam.
What will be your Space Jam?
What will you create to make the world awesome? Nothing if you keep sitting there!
- A Pep Talk from Kid President
On this lovely Thursday night, while my friends are out partying on their college campuses, playing kickball on the National Mall, or traveling the globe, here I am working for the 14th hour in a row on a project that doesn't pay me a penny. I'm questioning life choices, friendships, and anything under the sun that will distract me from the fact that I'm completely overwhelmed.
Why am I doing this to myself?
Because The Lemon Stand is my Space Jam.
If having a full-time job to pay the bills means I have to spend all my free time working on The Lemon Stand, then that's what that means. If it means I have to give up a social life for a period of my life, then that's what that means. I believe in the power of my Space Jam and I believe in my ability to positively impact my world. I believe that with great risk comes great reward and that hard work is made evident when there is heart and passion in everything you do
I think the first step is setting real expectations for yourself while dreaming unrealistically large dreams. Allow yourself to set big goals and strict timelines but also to not hit the mark or not finish on time every once in a while. It's ok to make a mistake. I'd be more worried if you never did.
The second step is to not get caught up in the details. The minute you start to overthink your dream, your brain reminds you that it's actually really difficult to do it all. And then all of a sudden, you decide to slow down or give up or "put it off for later" (aka never). Don't let that happen. Push through. Lose some sleep to get stuff done and if it's nearly perfect then sometimes it's good enough. If you strive for perfection, you'll never finish a project.
The third step is to surround yourself with supportive people. This can be friends, family, or strangers. I'll be the first to tell you sometimes your friends and family won't be the ones who are jumping up and down with you when you start pursuing your dream - and that's ok. Just roll with it. One day you'll meet people who love your idea and want to support you 110% - I call these people my circle. You'll find them if you haven't already.
I hope you join me on this adventure. I am hard at work on some exciting things for The Lemon Stand and I can't wait to share them with you.
Find your Space Jam - and let me know how I can help motivate, support, and encourage you. We're here for each other.
