For a while now, if you know me at all (or enough to follow me on social media), then you have seen my urgent plea to register or donate to Dance Marathon and support the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Children's Hospital. If you have seen me running around my campus, you might know me as "the super involved girl" as I promote what seems to be every organization on campus.
So what is different about "DM"?
If you would have asked me a year ago why I participate in Dance Marathon, I am not sure I would have been able to give you an answer. Even more recently when asked the question, it was extremely difficult to put it into words. But after careful thought and consideration, really thinking about what I was doing, I found my answer:
I DM because... I love creating smiles and giving happiness.
My life motto has always been "everyday is an adventure" and I cling to that phrase. I strive to make each and every day meaningful and full of purpose. Through Dance Marathon and the opportunities that have followed, I have met children, with traumatic illnesses, who live their lives with the same meaning and purpose that I strive for. I had to ask myself: Would I do the same if that were me? And honestly, I can't say I would.
I could not imagine being a 9-year-old girl, full of life and spunk, and meet with a doctor who would tell me that I have months to live. I would not know what a smile was. But that is not true for the patients of MUSC Children's Hospital. I have seen more smiles walking through the hallways of ICU than I have at Disney World. But why they are so happy is something that I have never understood.
They have hope.
I am their hope. As a participant in Dance Marathon, and now serving on the Executive Board, I get to promote a cause worth fighting for. I have the ability to help raise money for MUSC Children's Hospital and the patients and families that cannot afford the necessary care to survive, even if it's just for a big longer.
Together, we make miracles. We create more birthdays, more holidays, more movie nights, more spelling bees, better treatment options and a better quality of life.
That is why I DM.
Find a cause worth fighting for.
